This song personally taught me a lot. I carried this song around with me for way too long - from a 4th of July weekend in NJ, to visiting Berlin, Germany for my birthday, to now. All in all the patience paid off, and offered some important lessons. A lot of the time as artists we hesitate and prolong closure. What I mean is we keep working on a project because we want things to be as close to perfection that we simply put it to the side or on hold. We will create and start new projects, but we stop when we don't feel the art is in the light of perfection we hold for it, or in the potential we see it will take for it to be truly completed for release. In my search to figure out why we do this as artists, I read a book called "Finish" by Jon Acuff; this is what I discovered: "The main stumbling block that people encounter when they try to finish their projects is not laziness, but perfectionism. Perfectionism convinces us that anything less than perfect is a failure, and the only worthwhile goals are ones that are grand and difficult – and make you miserable. If we accept that nothing will ever be perfect, we can start to enjoy the rewards of productivity and accomplishment." As some of you may already know, da Vinci kept a nice journal (that Bill Gates currently possesses) that proves tons of unknown work that he left us when going to the richest place on earth, the grave. Think about it. All of the wonderful, unfinished goals, cures, art, and music that goes to the grave when we die. The grave is the richest place on earth and it saddens me to think about art or creativity dying and not being set free. Even though we tend to not finish work that we love and know has potential, creation never stops for us. In my case, patience prevailed. I created this track with one of my homies dudugrisi and we just did us. I referenced this on my bandcamp page, but as an artist, we should never give up pride in our work. At the end of the day, however, we should not be afraid to just release our art as-is while continuing to create. We are our own fans first, and the world will choose second whether it's what they want to hear, read, like, pass on, or be inspired by. In 2018 I am looking forward to creating and setting up projects for faster success, purely releasing. Getting paid enough money being able to do music full time is one of the hardest things I have encountered and that journey takes time and patience. Life can hinder how fast we as artists would like to finish certain projects, but my intentions of sharing and releasing will always prevail. What do you think? Do you struggle with perfectionism when releasing your pieces? Do you have any tips for other artists going through this struggle? Yours truly, FreePay~ FreePaystheSoul Releases New Single "I Knew What You Knew" Available now on Spotify & Itunes!12/7/2017
About The Track:
This track was cut and written in the moment like many other songs I hold in what I call my "archive of potential". Eduardo Marinho aka "dudugrisi" at the time had invited me over to his place to head out and check out Echo Stage in DC for the first time and in the midst of pre-gaming he picked up his acoustic nylon guitar and the improv came about and took flight.
I worked on the song for multiple summers writing lyrics on the beach of NJ and then finalized the lyrics when I went to visit Berlin for the first time. This song like many songs I aim to release, at a faster pace I hope, are testament that this "improv" ability that I hold is special. The content that we create as writers, singers, is not for us but for the world to choose to listen to and like, however, we all take pride in our craft and I feel like I am on the right path just need to find the right team to take my content to the next level. Since my friend Jason Mendelson of MetroSongs gave me the courage to start performing again after one of my good friends Shawn Dake passed away due to suicide, IOTA open mic night got me going again. Since the day I checked out the venue and performed on stage, there has always been an electric aroma to this place. A place where you didn't get jugged, you were able just to do you. To find the right combination of life, city, and humbleness always made me feel that there was something genuinely different and very special about IOTA and the people I got to meet. "El Rojo" aka Alex Perez has done a phenomenal job running the place and everyone is appreciative for all his effotrs always making every Wed night for three years with the exception of two such a success! I felt so nervous inside the first time I got up there. In the process of looking for a guitarist to record and perform with. I was really fortunate to get to perform with some really great musicians from Washington DC. Not having anyone to work on music with I would stop by any Wednesday night I could and jump on stage with anyone brave enough to improv something with me on stage with ABSOLUTELY NO PRACTICE. I was lucky to be able to perform with Kaylon the night before he left to France. This video captured by my friend Lindsey Crumling was the first time meeting Kaylon and the last time seeing Kaylon. Alex called my number and I went up to Ray the first guitarist I approached to see if he would go on stage with me. He went outside and got Kaylon to go up on stage with me and I'm so happy that the moment was captured. These open mic nights where mini therapeutic sessions for the things that where going on inside of me that I had been holding in my unconscious mind, which IOTA helped me release on stage. After my trip back from Peru and seeing all of my family. I felt it was even more of a duty of mine to continue pursuing the thing I love most, being on stage and signing, most importantly being blessed enough to have the privileged to do so. On the stage of IOTA I was able to ride my emotions via the vehicle of melodies being played by selective musicians I was lucky enough to perform with in its time of existence. While in Peru I wrote a song in my grandfathers home in a section where he used to play his exact guitar I was holding for the first time in over 22 years. I improved in front of my Uncle Benjamin and this is what came about. I then took the song I came up with and my grandfathers guitar I brought back from Peru and prepared to get on stage. For the very first time was getting ready to play and sing the guitar. I had seen Marcus another musician I got to meet at IOTA. Marcus is one of those very talented people who can play multiple instruments. After seeing him play his harmonica on the set before me I asked him if he would go on stage with me and without any hesitation we took the stage. Being able to play with Jorge Serafin was very special and memorable as we both dedicated a song to my grandfather and to my all my family back in Lima Peru. That was a very special night. RIP IOTA! IOTA will host live music all day from noon until close, presenting over a dozen local and touring acts. The party begins with D.C. based singer-songwriter Margot MacDonald and charges on with some of our favorite locals like The Cowards Choir, Justin Jones and Laura Tsaggaris. The show will end with a performance from José Miguel Contreras of Canadian indie rock band By Divine Right–check out the full lineup below. It’s a $10 cover to get in.
For the rest of the week, IOTA has an open mic on Wednesday and two shows from Last Train Home on Thursday and Friday. I wanted to get some opinions on a possible Art Cover design for my new single "I knew what you knew". These are the covers that have been done via Fiverr. As of now I have not pulled the trigger on any of the shown art covers above as I really want to choose art that relates to the track as well as feedback from you guys. Let me know which Art Cover you like? Or If you have any fiverr freelancers you recommend or a creative person you have worked with in the past. Please feel free to shoot me a quick email at [email protected] Thank you guys! Here is a link to a preview of the song on my SoundCloud Here is a link to acoustic performance lyrical video on YouTube Channel It's been too long everyone. It never seems to amaze me how fast time passes. As I get older I truly feel that saying has becomes less of a cliche and more of a reality, no joke. I hope everyone's summer has been going great and everyone got to do some fun things so far this 2017. What are some of the things that you guys are happy you were able to do this summer?
Starting with my trip to Peru. I feel so blessed and truly grateful to be able to have been a part of my great aunt and great uncles 50th anniversary. I really hope I can continue visiting at least once a year. This May I got to spend time with my aunts, uncles, cousin, nephew's, nieces. I got to see my Uncle Antonio who I haven't seen since I was 6 years old. It was amazing being able to give him a huge hug and to know that he is doing great. He let me know of cousins, nieces, and nephews that I need to meet very very soon. I got to meet my cousin Guillermo and Almudena. I also got to meet my new uncle Diego from my moms side. I got to see my dad. I got to see my sister at the University she teaches at. I also got to spend the day with my lovely sister in law Fari and got to spend all day with my little nephew and nice. Got to have some well needed bro bro time with my younger brother. Seeing all of family in Peru has really helped me bring my heritage, culture, and overall it has really shined a brighter light on what really matters to me in my life. I am also very grateful I got to see the beach as much as I did with my family this summer. Even though a majority of all those trips were mostly day trips to the beach I am still very grateful. I also got to visit two of my best friends in Bluffton SC. I got to see their lovely home, new addition to their family, and got to meet their phenomenal neighbors next door. I now know what South Carolina living feels like and I can see myself having a home there, hopefully in a few years. Thank you Chancey and thank you Amber for having me over. I am also very proud that I had the time to rebuild a deck with my dad. I've asked numerous people that are older than me what some of their regrets where and what they would do over again if they could. What I tend to hear alot in repetition is I wish I saw more of my family and spent more time with my parents. I cherish more and more my time spent with my parents and being able to work on a project with my dad Pablo was a cherished experience. I also GSD in the studio with the help of my friend Jason. Really looking forward to releasing a few singles. Each single will have the initial improv, acoustic version, and demo version of the track. With the help of my friend Bo I look to instruct and show case how improvisation works in a large spectrum of things. In music it begins naturally in the unconscious mind and progresses to a beautifully written song and into a professional recording you can be proud of. Stay tuned! Much Love Everyone! When returning from my trip to visit my family in Peru I couldn't wait to perform live again this time with my grandfathers guitar. The guitar was something very special to my grandfather and it got passed down to my uncle Benjamin when my grandfather passed away. My uncle has passed on this family treasure to me and now I carry the torch forward. This guitar means alot to me because I know his soul still remains inside this guitar and his influence and life will now continue to carry on. I was lucky enough to have Jorge honor his presence and talent being able to perform and play on my grandfathers guitar. Listen to Jorge Serafin Sound Cloud Page Click here soundcloud.com/freepaysthesoul www.instagram.com/fpts6/ www.facebook.com/freepaysthesoul/ twitter.com/freepaysthesoul Visiting my family in Peru this year was very special for me. When my grandfather died my uncle Benjamin inherited my grandfathers guitar. My grandfather truly enjoyed playing and singing with his guitar. In my stay in Peru my Uncle and I cleaned up my grandfathers guitar, restringing it and such. Once strung I got to play and sing his guitar in his studio side of the house where the acoustics are very well heard. This is a recording of that genuine moment caught in "Lima, Peru". Got to meet a few member's of the band "Not From Ohio". Spoke with Justin "percussion" for a bit and he showed me his sweet cajon rig he has put together. They played at "cheap seats" last night as a full band but did an acoustic session at "Fat Patties".
