Vision over Money. Value over success!
This song personally taught me a lot. I carried this song around with me for way too long - from a 4th of July weekend in NJ, to visiting Berlin, Germany for my birthday, to now. All in all the patience paid off, and offered some important lessons. A lot of the time as artists we hesitate and prolong closure. What I mean is we keep working on a project because we want things to be as close to perfection that we simply put it to the side or on hold. We will create and start new projects, but we stop when we don't feel the art is in the light of perfection we hold for it, or in the potential we see it will take for it to be truly completed for release. In my search to figure out why we do this as artists, I read a book called "Finish" by Jon Acuff; this is what I discovered: "The main stumbling block that people encounter when they try to finish their projects is not laziness, but perfectionism. Perfectionism convinces us that anything less than perfect is a failure, and the only worthwhile goals are ones that are grand and difficult – and make you miserable. If we accept that nothing will ever be perfect, we can start to enjoy the rewards of productivity and accomplishment." As some of you may already know, da Vinci kept a nice journal (that Bill Gates currently possesses) that proves tons of unknown work that he left us when going to the richest place on earth, the grave. Think about it. All of the wonderful, unfinished goals, cures, art, and music that goes to the grave when we die. The grave is the richest place on earth and it saddens me to think about art or creativity dying and not being set free. Even though we tend to not finish work that we love and know has potential, creation never stops for us. In my case, patience prevailed. I created this track with one of my homies dudugrisi and we just did us. I referenced this on my bandcamp page, but as an artist, we should never give up pride in our work. At the end of the day, however, we should not be afraid to just release our art as-is while continuing to create. We are our own fans first, and the world will choose second whether it's what they want to hear, read, like, pass on, or be inspired by. In 2018 I am looking forward to creating and setting up projects for faster success, purely releasing. Getting paid enough money being able to do music full time is one of the hardest things I have encountered and that journey takes time and patience. Life can hinder how fast we as artists would like to finish certain projects, but my intentions of sharing and releasing will always prevail. What do you think? Do you struggle with perfectionism when releasing your pieces? Do you have any tips for other artists going through this struggle? Yours truly, FreePay~
